Intermediate Zonal Jets in the Tropical Pacific Ocean Observed by Argo Floats
نویسندگان
چکیده
Argo float data in the tropical Pacific Ocean during January 2003–August 2011 are analyzed to obtain Lagrangian subsurface velocities at their parking depths. Maps of mean zonal velocities at 1000 and 1500 m are presented. At both depths, a series of alternating westward and eastward zonal jets with ameridional scale of 1.58 is seen at the basin scale from 108S to 108N. These alternating jets, with mean speeds about 5 cm s, are clearly present in the western and central parts of the basin but weaken and disappear approaching the eastern coast. They are stronger in the Southern Hemisphere. Along the equator at both 1000 and 1500 m, a westward jet is seen. The jets closer to the equator are remarkably zonally coherent across the basin, but the jets farther poleward appear broken in several segments. In the western half of the basin, the 1000-m zonal jets appear to slant slightly poleward from east to west. At the western boundary in the south (east of Solomon Islands and PapuaNewGuinea), the alternating jets appear to connect in narrow boundary currents. Seasonal zonal velocity anomalies at 1000 and 1500 m are observed to propagate westward across the basin; they are consistent with annual vertically propagating Rossby waves superimposed on the mean zonal jets. Their meridional structure suggests that more than one meridional mode is present.

Distributions of mixed layer properties in North Pacific water mass formation areas: comparison of Argo floats and World Ocean Atlas
Winter mixed layer characteristics in the North Pacific Ocean are examined and compared between Argo floats in 2006 and the World Ocean Atlas 2001 (WOA01) climatology for a series of named water masses, North Pacific Tropical Water (NPTW), Eastern Subtropical Mode Water (ESTMW), North Pacific Subtropical Mode Water (NPSTMW), Light Central Mode Water (LCMW) and Dense Central Mode Water (DCMW). متن کاملDeep ocean impact of a Madden-Julian oscillation observed by Argo floats.
Using the new Argo array of profiling floats that gives unprecedented space-time coverage of the upper 2000 meters of the global ocean, we present definitive evidence of a deep tropical ocean component of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO). The surface wind stress anomalies associated with the MJO force eastward-propagating oceanic equatorial Kelvin waves that extend downward to 1500 meters. T...
متن کاملGeostrophic Circulation in the Tropical North Pacific Ocean Based on Argo Profiles
Absolute geostrophic currents in the North Pacific Ocean are calculated from the newly gridded Argo profiling float data using the P-vector method for the period of 2004–11. The zonal geostrophic currents based on the Argo profile data are found to be stronger than those based on the traditionalWorld Ocean Atlas 2009 (WOA09) data. A westward mean geostrophic flow underneath the North Equatorial...

متن کاملImpacts of Argo salinity in NCEP Global Ocean Data Assimilation System: The tropical Indian Ocean
[1] Salinity profiles collected by the International Argo Project (International Argo Project data are available at http://argo.jcommops.org) since 2000 provide us an unprecedented opportunity to study impacts of salinity data on the quality of ocean analysis, which has been hampered by a lack of salinity observations historically. The operational Global Ocean Data Assimilation System (GODAS) d...
